Abstract
Dissection of the extracranial carotid artery is an important reason for cerebrovascular event especially in young patients. A 37 year old female was admitted to the hospital suffered from aphasia and agitation. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated acute infarction involving the territory of the left middle cerebral artery posterior temporal area and stenosis of the left internal carotid artery in servical portion on digital substraction angiography. It was suggessted traumatic dissection of the extracranial internal carotid artery because of diving and swimming. Her symptoms gradually improved by both anticoagulant therapy and aspirin. Surgery and stent assisted reconstruction of extracranial carotid dissections represent an emerging therapetic alternative to standart medical therapy.
