Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to retrospectively examine patients diagnosed with intradurally located spinal tumors and operated in our clinic and also to evaluate the clinical and surgical outcomes under the light of the literature.

Material and Methods: 34 cases (19 male and 15 female) of intradurally located spinal tumors who were operated in our clinic are included in the study. Patient’s ages ranged between 16 and 66 (avrg. 41) years.

Results: While the most common pathologic diagnosis with extramedullary located tumors has been schwannoma and meningioma, while astrocytoma and epandimoma have been frequently encountered intramedullary tumors. Total tumor excision rate was 86 % for extramedullary tumors, and 47 % for intramedullary tumors. Five cases underwent postoperative radiotheraphy (RT). Cases were followed up for 3 to 46 months (avrg. 26 months). One patient was lost in the early postoperative period and one in the late postoperative period. 25 cases out of 26 were further contacted and have had good functional status (Frankel D and E).

Conclusion: With the help of technological advancements, in recent years more aggressive surgical techniques in the treatment of spinal tumors have been developed with more promising surgical outcomes.
