A History of the Spinal Cord

Abstract

Spinal cord anatomy has always been an interesting subject for medical scientists. Anatomical discoveries, were delayed because of the complex structre of the nervous system. When historical records are examined, it is seen that revolutions in medical science are paralel to the innovations in technology. Knowing and defining special structures, such as the nervous system had serious difficulties in the absence of necessary equipment and proper diagnostic methods. Earliest records of the anatomy of spinal cord are found in the Edwin Smith Papyrus, written in 2600 B.C. First real discoveries were the studies of Galen, who lived between 130-200 A.D. Galen made very important descriptions of the anatomic structures of the spinal cord. Long after Galen, we meet Ballisus, who made anatomical definitions, that are still in use today. Many scientists, studying neurological science, studies spinal cord anatomy. Today, these studies continue, with modern, technological equipments.
