The Therapeutic Effects of Melatonin in Head Trauma

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a hormone synthesized by pineocytes in the pineal gland. Melatonin was administered as a neuroprotective agent particularly to prevent secondary brain damage after traumatic brain injuries in previous studies. In the present review, we discuss the therapeutic role of melatonin in head traumas in the light of current literature.
