A Rare Cause of Epileptic Seizures: Fahr Disease

Fahr’s disease is a rare neurological disorder characterized by bilateral symmetrical aggregation of calcium deposits in basal ganglia, thalamus, centrum semiovale and cerebellar dentate nucleus. Although idiopathic causes frequently play an important role in the underlying etiology of Fahr’s disease. Disorders of calcium metabolism are important secondary of Fahr’s disease. Common clinical findings of the disease are related to extrapyramidal system disorders such as parkinsonism, choreoathetosis, and dystonia whereas epileptic seizures, dementia and mood change disorders are also seen less frequently. Cerebral computed tomography is the best useful diagnostic method. Some cases can be also confused with clinical manifestations of subarachnoid hemorrhage on admission to emergency services. In this report we present a 65 -year-old woman who was brought to the to emergency clinic with seizure, and then diagnosed as having Fahr’s disease, with her clinically, radiological and endocrinological features.
